Filon Products Limited are pleased to announce the celebration of 50 years of manufacturing.

Since 1957 Filon have been producing GRP rooflights as well as other GRP ancillary products. The last five decades have seen many changes in the industry, not least the decimation of the UK manufacturing base. Despite all the pitfalls and set backs the manufacturing industry in the West Midlands has faced over the years, to achieve 50 years of trading is a major achievement for any company.

Filon's success has, and always will be, based on knowledge and experience of the industry. Many senior managers and employees have been with the company in excess of over 30 years. This experience along with the steady influx of new employees has lead to many developments, the growth of the company and a sound basis of trading. Filon's past achievements and their aims for the coming years will be the highlight of their 50 year celebrations this year.

In its history the company were the first to manufacture GRP rooflights in the United Kingdom. Filon, at that time, were part of British Industrial Plastics (B.I.P.) and took on an American patent for the production of GRP sheeting by continuous process. Prior to this all production was by spray or hand lay up. The introduction of this pultrusion method revolutionised the industry. In the late 50's and early 60's the name Filon became synonymous with translucent GRP sheeting in the same way that Hoover won over the vacuum cleaner market.

In the 1970's right through to today the metal industry started to come on board so much so that Filon make over 900 different profiles to suit the metal industry. Despite recessions the development and diversity that Filon have introduced into the industry has seen GRP used in various applications besides rooflights, from the aircraft industry to North Sea oil rigs, sports stadia to traffic signs, solar heating to modern rooflights that comply with all of the current Building Regulations, have seen Filon grow and still known as the leading GRP rooflight manufacture in the UK.
