Latham Vauxhall, an old established car sales and service company in Devon, were faced with
a major problem over their car servicing department. The existing corrugated iron and
glazing was leaking every time rain occurred, causing hazards to the work force. They realised
that the roof had been repaired many times with various roof coatings and had come to the end
of its serviceable life.
Anchorage Roofing in Paignton, Devon (members of the NFRC) were called in to carry out a survey
of the roof. Terry Lee, Managing Director of Anchorage Roofing, was given a brief to solve the
leaks once and for all.
Terry realised that there were a number of problems that needed to be overcome. The roof trusses
would not lend themselves to modern metal systems without major
structural design work due to
the weight and purlin centres. The client required minimum
disruption in order to carry on
their business, and the glazing required removal due to corrosion and broken glass panels.
Having attended a seminar given by Filon Products on their lightweight GRP Over-roofing system, Terry
contacted Filon to see if the system would be suitable for this project.
With the help of Filon's technical team he was able to present to his clients a viable proposal
for over-roofing the existing roof with a lightweight GRP sheet, which was not only cost effective
but would also allow the continuation of the client's business without too much disturbance.
New GRP rooflights, also made by Filon, were incorporated into the roof system giving
considerably
better light transmission than the previous glass panelling. The Filon roof-
lights, due to their
diffusion properties, now spread light over the bulk of the workshop
floor area making the working
environment safer and environmentally better to work in.
The clients were extremely pleased with the work, which was not only within budget but was
completed
ahead of schedule with no working time being lost by the client while the work
was carried out.
