for Refurbishing Old Roofs Installation Guide
The Filon Over-Roofing system is very easy to install and requires
no special tools other than a normal roofer's drill with a clutch to avoid over-tightening.
The asbestos cement roof must be regarded as fragile and all necessary precautions
taken to work safely at all times. The original roofing must not be directly walked on, and
to avoid damage to the Filon Over-roofing sheets, roof ladders must
be used at all times during the over roofing assembly.
It is important when installing the over-roof that it should be laid in the same direction as the original roof.
The general guidelines when carrying out installation are :
Generally work in the same direction as the old roof was laid working progressively
along the roof completing each upslope tier before moving to the next.
Unless the roof pitch exceeds 150 it is not necessary to prefix the Filon Profix
spacers. Lay them on the roof, adjusting position as the Filon Over-roofing sheets
are laid, fixing sheeting and spacers in one operation.
Care should be taken to minimise the release of asbestos fibre, particularly
into the building. All drilling should be done from above the old roof, thereby
allowing asbestos cement swarf to pass up the drill shaft and released within the
new roof cavity.
Concern has been expressed that drilling through asbestos cement will release
asbestos fibres into the building. Since the last thing the drill bit drills through is
the steel purlin, the only swarf to fall into the building will be steel filings.
Air tests carried out afterwards have verified that there was no significant increase
in fibre release into
the building using Filon Over-Roofing.
