The Accordis production unit in Lancaster had a problem. The manufacturing process was creating a mildly corrosive atmosphere and the metal roof above was becoming part of the process.
At first a few holes around the ridge appeared but this got worse. Within 10 years the ridge had disappeared completely and the sheets in the body of the roof were doing the same.
GRP is generally resistant to most chemicals but a unique Isoflex gel coat resin from Filon,
which can be applied on the weather face, the internal face or both faces, creates a sheet
that will protect a GRP roof from virtually all atmospheric pollutants that nature or
industry can muster.
Eventually Accordis had to put nets under the roof to catch the larger pieces of falling
metal.
The solution therefore was to remove the remainder of the metal roof and rebuild the roofwith Filon DR ReFurb sheeting, made to a fire rating of AA Class 1 and treated on both sides with Filon Isoflex gel coat.
Filon DR ReFurb is an exceptionally strong GRP sheet with its additional woven matt glass reinforcement, ensuring the roof will remain non-fragile for well in excess of 20 years - subject to the metal fixings remaining in place!
