Project Overview
The All Makes Autocentre in Ilminster recently underwent a major roof refurbishment to replace its aging asbestos roof sheets. Tek Clad Ltd, the appointed contractor, took on the task of removing the hazardous materials and installing a modern roofing system that prioritises safety, efficiency, and durability. Filon’s GRP rooflights were a key component in delivering the project’s success.
Challenges
This project presented several complexities. The existing roof, consisting of several thousand square metres of asbestos cement sheets, required careful removal in line with strict health and safety regulations while the building owner continued to use the buildings. The building itself, in the middle of a residential area, with its concrete portal frames, added to the challenge, as Tek Clad needed to construct a new timber framework to create secure fixing points for the new roofing system. Beyond the structural work, the project demanded materials that could meet high standards of thermal insulation and safety. The aim was to deliver a roof that not only improved energy efficiency but also achieved non-fragility requirements for long-term safety and reliability.
Tek Clad’s meticulous planning & coordination with the building owner & occupier ensured the project was carried out safely and no one was put at risk.
Solution
The solution involved installing composite panels complemented by Filon’s GRP Factory Assembled Insulated Rooflights (FAIRs). These rooflights were chosen for their exceptional performance and non-fragility, achieving Class B non-fragility in compliance with ACR[M]001:2019. Filon’s rooflights also enhanced the building’s thermal performance to reduce energy demands. Alongside this, their excellent light transmission significantly improved the internal environment of the facility making it brighter and more energy efficient.
Outcome
The project successfully transformed the All Makes Autocentre’s roof, providing a high-quality solution that meets modern safety, performance, and energy standards. A working environment & real lives have been made more comfortable every day because of the new roof provided on this nest of buildings.
